Gothic literature, the birth of which is widely thought of as being the publication of Horace Walpole's 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto, mines a rich seam of dark and macabre themes that is often underpinned with a satirical awareness that is perhaps best demonstrated by Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey.

The precursor to the gothic novel was the work by the Graveyard Poets, a group of pre-Romantic English poets
of the 18th century whose work was characterised by somber meditations on the nature of death. Thomas Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard is widely thought of as being the greatest Elegy in English literature and became the inspiration for the first piece in the series, 'Elegy', which is still being worked on.

There are a number of well established elements that have become integral to the 'Gothic' theme; stock characters such as tyrants, persecuted maidens, vampires and angels inhabit a dark world of castles, melancholic landscapes and Gothic architecture intended to create an other worldly and dramatic scenario.

All the art in the Gothic series is available to purchase as either Giclee fine art prints, ready to hang framed or canvas wrap prints, poster prints or mounted prints. A range of products such as t-shirts, mouse mats, mugs and tote bags will also soon be available from the Zazzle store (details on the shop page).
